b.4. :: the god boys

the priest wrings his hands dry before returning to his office from the restroom; he again forgot his disks in his desk, and he needs them for working on next week's sermon. he reaches for the door and pushes his way into the hallway. he strolls down the passage, slowly looking over the flyers for rummage sales and dj appearances. the steps onto the landing that leads him to the thin steps separating him from the commons above him. every time that he climbs the stairs to the lobby in the evening, he is disoriented by the transition in lighting made since this afternoon's service. he reaches the commons and sees by the crates of records and that the first club kids have arrived. a young Korean kid in mild drag and white face paint sees him and calls out to him. they close the distance between one another with a few steps and extend their hands. they ask one another how their respective days have been going, and discuss the state of the space. they move to the sound booth, from which they may both view the pulpit. the priest points out a microphone on the lectern, and he asks that the kids be careful when moving it. the kid promises that they will be. they move back to the commons, where they see that the dj's groupies are holding open the heavy wooden doors, so that he may tote in his lp's. the priest notes that it is good to see that some kids are still listening to records these days; his sister's children are 'all about' cds. the drag kid agrees; he points out the superior sound of the vinyl to the cd. the preist mentions that he still maintains his vinyl collection, and he makes a few suggestions for playing at the show, which the kid accepts and promises to try to work them into the mix.
