~ wandering towards a horrible proustian experience at central park – where we were to be subjected not only to the music of pop hack leonard bernstein, but also to uncouth behavior of every new yorker who has ever abandoned their trash on public ground or drunkenly and boisterously copulated also on public ground – our library had the benefit of a score from an upper west side trash can: first editions of ‘complexity and contradiction in architecture’ and ‘the international style’.

~ ‘a.i.’ will go down a lot easier for the kubrick fans who realize that he has been long forgotten as far as this film goes; it is well worth at least a matinée price, if one remembers that kids, though absurd, are choice evidence of our shared hopelessness. it’s the beginning of a year of movies sure to inspire regret for being stuck in the weak and powerless new york city theaters: ‘planet of the apes’, ‘final fantasy’, ‘lord of the rings’, and, of course, ‘spider-man’.

~ hot damn! after a weeks-long struggle to enter our new new york offices , we are celebrating our birthday today six floors above the streets of harlem. as we still lack many facilities, such as furniture and our network, we are updating the log from the break room floor. we have our books and turntables and a brand new val kilmer dvd, so the evening’s office launch party may begin immediately.

~ we have not forgotten this freaking log in fact, while sleeping on the living room floor last night, a dream of updating this log was envisioned. however, events have been less than remarkable lately, for the week has been spent packing supplies, moving goods to the boys’ and girls’ club, and throwing worthless furniture into the alley behind the angry red offices. all time is being spent preparing for the big move, or spent reading in the front yard.

~ it has come to our attention that there is some movie award show or other in los angeles tonight. we can promise not only will we not seek out this year’s ceremony; we will also promise to take no part in the viewing of next year’s contenders: ‘say it isn’t so’, ‘tomcats’, or ‘see spot run’.

~ saving the best for last, it looks like macedonia has finally decided to get involved in some ethnic persecution. how on earth did these people get along for most of the century as yugoslavia, just to sell out their neighbors in a couple of years’ time?

~ gore vidal always seemed to us to be too much of a tight-ass to be much of a liberal, which is why it is such a delightful surprise to find the wry iconoclasm throughout his american chronicles. however, in his latest novel, the golden age, he surpasses his usual irreverence; he is downright alarmist. i don’t know if he is cutting loose with what he knows is most likely his last novel before death, but he paints a terrifying picture of the post-war (ww2) united states:
a nation that intentionally terrifies its own citizens with the threats of predatory nations seeking to destroy them at any moment – a moment that lasts perpetually – so that the citizens will continue to voluntarily turn over a third of their income to a government-subsidized weapons industry which is, in turn, subsidizing the political class to perpetuate the threat – they appear as communism, terrorism, drugs, or, currently, ‘states of concern’.
