initial development ~ In the beginning, I hoped to find sites within the city that have been somehow overlooked or forgotten. I sought to find a piece of residual or marginal space that seems unusable, but could be successfully reoccupied with a program or programs whose possibilities have heretofore gone unnoticed. The intent was to provide a scenario whose formalism would be convincing in the goal of having and owner or a city reevaluate the importance of a piece either publicly, commercially, or infrastructurally. ~ Now, the focus has been placed upon sites of occupation which are either not optimized by their current program's singular use or have caused their urban surroundings to suffer from over development due to their inefficient use of resources. These sites would benefit to some degree by the structural facilities and occupational behaviour that would be brought by the supplement of an adjacent and sometimes coincidental program. By searching within property boundaries, I hope to expose hidden opportunities for the occupant, the supplement, and the - immediate and complete - urban condition. ~ A few typologies have are proposed, and some of the resulting conditions of these, in either cases of experience or of artifact, have been described, with the intention of demonstrating validity or success of a particular match: : tj+dj : sunday, monday, tuesday, etc. school : the god boys : little rock : blighted + rabbit refuge : 1066 : smart 'not' final : 1100 solar : 1100 green : 1100 solar 2 : home aviary : bookmat : lee + wind : miss donuts public library : parkroof : pinkdot : roof 10 copy : roof 5 : squid tower : water home : whale tower : xla ~ Depending on the success of the marriages, examples will be found and investigated for attributes that are either lacking in abundance or available for exploitation. at this point, case studies can be developed to demonstrate the intent of the thesis can be carried out in a variety of situations without supposing that a particular formal set must be followed. ~ The focus will hence be set upon existing programs that will not only benefit one and another, but will provide a third and fourth benefit defined by new opportunities placed for both the familiar user and in the urban environment of their unfamiliar neighbors. Elseworlds This thesis offers a remedy for the contest raging between slow growth initiatives and the inherent American demands for personal space. A cursory glance across the urban fabric makes clear the abundant wasted resources and crumbling infrastructure; a meticulous inspection of the under-utilized material and marginalized spaces reveals conditions primed for an opportunistic settlement. The efficiency of built environments with respect to the programs with which they are filled is scrutinized; the results provide shortcomings and abundances which are reinterpreted as openings for other propositions. The result is the mating of traditionally autonomous programs in a manner that provides more chances for efficiency - spatially, fiscally, and environmentally - than they could achieve independently. If one program lacks resources, the other offers its unused territory; where one program is not using its territory most efficiently, another peacefully invades. Surpassing the notion of hybrid which exists solely as a novelty, the intent is to nurture a healthy symbiosis where two or more conditions merge into a third body that plays a role for each program, yet also performs in the community on its own. As this entity is introduced to the neighborhood, it initially may serve as a tool for the existing programs. After the period of familiarization, it will be open to reinterpretation, perpetuating its reuse through ensuing communities and civilizations. The scenarios exist within one district, a typical West L.A. neighborhood. Modest and unassuming, this neighborhood serves as a proving ground for general proposals that are strategically placed to demonstrate the community reaction to its defragmentation, rather than the formal value of the symbiotes. : bookmat : suburban national park : suburban national park : green hous(e)ing : defragmenting drive c: return to top thesis content written by and property ashley moore, 2000-2015 valid: xhtml css |
